A Desperate Need

Someone I knew passed away last weekend. Just hours after a family Thanksgiving dinner. After hearing all the details my heart hurts for his family. I mourn alongside his daughters, one of whom just got engaged and won't have a father to walk her down the isle. My heart hurts for them.

"Death Sucks" I whisper up to God. "Like really, this sucks. I hate it when people die."

God ever so gently reminds me of my part in death.

"Stupid sin causing death. But who am I kidding? I can't go one day with out sinning."

And then God reminds me of His part in death.

"Oh Jesus thank you for Grace. Thank you for taking my death. Thank you for taking my sins. I am dead apart from you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you"

In my path of Discovering Advent, I think about how different that situation might be with out a Savior.

A lost and broken world not sure of the grace to come. Seeing only obstacles and only rules. Trusting in their own power to deliver them from sin. Desperately hoping for a better way.

Jesus is not only the better way, he is the only way. The only atonement for our sins. The only way for life.

Thank you Jesus for the cross. For reminding me in the face of death for my desperate need for you. Thank you that You and You alone are the Savior. With out You we are lost.

  1. This was beautiful. It is only through Christ that life and death are reconciled and the sting of death is done away with. It still sucks! But we are all on a journey and arrive home at different times.

  2. Thank you for this perspective on death. Our family has had two losses in the past 15 months, so this resonates with me.

  5. It was when my younger brother died after a lengthy battle with colon cancer at age 35 that I was struck by the thought that this world is really not our home. How that realization has changed the direction of my life. I was a believer then, but now I have a passion and drive to live my life for the Lord while I am in this world that is even more intense. His grace still amazes me!!

by the by, I am visiting via On Your Heart Tuesday for the first time since learning how to link up with everyone. What a treasure abounds on the internet.

  6. Wouldn't it be amazing if we all lived with that eternal perspective? I love seeing the Lord take something awful and change it into something great in only the way he can.

Thanks for stopping by! Hope to see you around again :)

  7. I came over from Charity's Advent linky, Angi. My prayer this week has been: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. Thank you for grace, oh yes. This.

  8. Angi - I love that you preached the gospel to yourself in order to move from despair to hope. Even we who know Jesus have to preach to ourselves every day to keep ourselves following hard down the right path toward the Savior. I love Advent because it's a season in which I intentional tell myself these things every day.

Thanks for joining our High Calling Advent Writing project. I am so glad to have your thoughts among the others.

    Blessings!
