I love TV.

All kinds of TV. I like reality shows, dramas, those gross crime scene ones, the Office, 30 Rock, and pretty much anything except Jersey Shore.
You know how some people are "movie people"? I'm like that but with TV shows. I love getting whole series on DVD and watching them over and over.
Maybe this makes me a "bad Christian" but aren't we all "bad Christians"? If we were all good and perfect then we wouldn't even need to be Christians at all.
And since every.single.thing reveals the character of God, can't you look at things with your renewed mind and sort out what is good and what isn't?
"Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - his good, pleasing, and perfect will" Romans 12:2So what does not conforming to the pattern of this world look like? Does it look like avoiding everything completely and going and living in a cave? No. Does it look like being so consumed with the world that nobody could tell that you're a Christian? No.
It means being in this world, interacting with and observing, and yet not being of this world- thinking differently than the world tells us to.
God has given us a renewed mind and his Spirit living within us to that we might test and approve what is good. And because truth is not subjective, and all truth comes from the Lord, we can see aspects of his character by knowing what is true!
Now, you have to walk cautiously and be continually asking God to fill you with his spirit so that you can test and approve what's right. But isn't that true always? If you're interacting with this world (like you should because Jesus told us to in a direct commandment) don't you have to be on guard?
So let me tell you about one of my favorite shows right now and how I think it reveals the character of God. I just love the show Once Upon a Time. Have you seen it? Do you love it as much as I do? :)
It's this awesome fairy tale meets real world story. There are two worlds and one thing that connects them- a book of fairy tales. Each character in the real world coincides with one in the fairy tale land.
The Mayor, who is the evil queen in the fairy tale side of the story, is the only character that knows there are two worlds. Others speculate but she knows what's true and she lies about it to everyone.
And as the deception grows and the other characters start to piece things together, they feel betrayed and hurt by her web of lies.
God, the ever truthful, hates lies also! He is quick to warn us from telling them. He says in Proverbs 6 that he hates lying lips and in John 8 that Satan is a liar, the father of lies, and when we lie we are speaking his native language!
To be clear I avoid shows that are clearly against God's will - shows that promote sexual immorality in particular. But I do believe there are shows that are "morally neutral" and can reveal the glory of God.
What do you guys think? Do you watch TV at home? What are you 'rules'?

We are all "bad Christians" other wise Christ wouldn't have had to die. Of course I'm not saying be bad on purpose and I know that's not your heart either but you're right. We find things to distract us from His purposes.
ReplyDeleteI am struggling to find balance with the internet lately. I hadn't been having a problem but it sneaked up on me. I think it started with Downton Abbey then I'd blog hop after an episode now I'm finding Pinterest a bit addicting. It can all be used to build relationships and to minister to others but it can also be used to suck our time and keep us from being effective.
I hope you find a solution! ;-)
Keep thinking and writing and sharing...
I used your new domain! Fun!
ReplyDeleteI love once upon a time. :) That and gymnasitcs are my favs. I don't watch anything else. Mostly because I get too frusterated b/c of what they put before people as ok. And b/c I want to keep a pretty tight reign on what the kids see and b/c I don't have enough time. Do love movies though... wish I had more time.
