Objective Wisdom

This past weekend my wonderful small group looked at the wisdom literature in the Bible. One passage stuck out to me, especially as we discussed the questions "What is wisdom?" and "Where do we get wisdom?". It's from Proverbs 8 where wisdom is personified as a woman.
"The LORD brought me forth as the first of his works, before his deeds of old; I was appointed from eternity, from the beginning, before the world began.
When there were no oceans, I was given birth, when there were no springs abounding with water; before the mountains were settled in place, before the hills, I was given birth, before he made the earth or its fields or any of the dust of the world.
I was there when he set the heavens in place, when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep, when he established the clouds above and fixed securely the fountains of the deep, when he gave the sea its boundary so the waters would not overstep his command, and when he marked out the foundations of the earth" - Proverbs 8:22-29
Okay how neat is that? Wisdom was around before the earth was even created!

The world will tell you that wisdom is gained through experience. Which may be partially true, but ultimately wisdom is from the Lord.

It was around before any experiences were even had. Just like truth, wisdom is objective. It has always been around! Some things are wise and some things just aren't.

So how do we gain more wisdom? James tells us that all we have to do is ask and the Lord will give abundantly.

What do you think friends? Is wisdom an experience? What are somethings that are always wise or never wise?

  1. This is such an interesting post. I think wisdom is a person -- Christ. His Word is alive and provides the direction I need. As I apply what I learn in His Word into my life with discernment from the Holy Spirit, then wisdom is in action. :)
